Nasarawa University Produces Nigeria’s ‘First Professor Of Capital Markets’

By this development, Mr Uwaleke, who is currently Head of Department, Banking & Finance of the University, becomes Nigeria’s first professor of capital markets.

A statement from the Banking & Finance department of the University  on Friday said Mr Uwaleke, a multi-disciplinary scholar, holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Accounting and a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Economics (specialising in Finance).

He also holds a Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) in Finance with over 20 years of lecturing engagements in higher institutions across the country.

The statement said Mr Uwaleke at various times taught, ‘’Capital Markets & Institutions’’ in the University of Abuja and Kaduna State University.

At Nasarawa State University, apart from heading the Banking & Finance Department, he also handled Investments & Securities Markets Studies at both undergraduate and post graduate levels.

Mr Uwaleke, described by colleagues as a thorough-bred professional, is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), a Chartered Banker and a Chartered Stockbroker.

He belongs to several other professional groups, among them the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN); the Institute of Capital Market Registrars (ICMR) and the Nigerian Economic Society (NES).

Besides, he is on the Editorial Board of the Nigerian Journal of Securities Markets, a publication of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

A member of the Advisory Committee of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), the Economist has been actively involved in capital markets literacy efforts of the Abuja branch of the NSE and has made immense contributions to the growth of the Nigerian capital market.


Mr Uwaleke led research teams drawn from SEC that put together a compendium of ‘’African & Middle East Capital Markets’’ as well as a publication on ‘’Nigeria’s Fixed Income Market’’.

Apart from facilitating several training programmes for staff of SEC, he equally made significant inputs in the ongoing effort by the Commission to introduce capital market studies in the curriculum of secondary schools in Nigeria.

He has authored/co-authored over 60 articles in referenced local and international journals, in addition to 10 books, including ‘’Contemporary Issues in Capital Market Studies’’ and ‘’An Insight into the Nigerian Capital Market.’’

His publications reflect a bias for capital markets and institutions where his research interest is deeply rooted. He also sits on the Board of Peace Capital Market Limited as non-Executive Director.
